Rare earth minerals such as monazite exist in coal and have grain sizes smaller than 5 µm. In this study, froth flotation was successful in concentrating rare earth minerals existing in a thickener underflow material derived from Fire Clay seam coal that contained around 431 ppm of total rare earth elements (TREE) on a dry ash basis.

The flotation of rare earth (RE) minerals (i.e. xenotime, monazite-(Nd), RE carbonate mineral) from an ore consisting mainly of silicate minerals (i.e. primary silicate minerals and nontronite clay) and hematite was investigated using tall oil fatty acids (Aero 704, Sylfat FA2) as collector.
Whereas traditional models fail to adequately address froth recovery and recovery by entrainment, the high-fidelity model defines these phenomena based on an improved understanding of the pulp/froth interface. Solution chemistry considerations that govern rare earth mineral separation by flotation were identified, characterized, and optimized.
Rare-earth element - Rare-earth element - Processing ores: All rare-earth ores contain less than 10 percent REO and must be upgraded to about 60 percent in order to be processed further. They are first ground to a powder and then separated from the other materials in the ore body by various standard processes that include magnetic and/or electrostatic separation and flotation.

Froth flotation as a fundamental method for processing complex minerals is commonly applied to the surface chemistry and beneficiation of rare-earth-bearing minerals. This is due to the fact that it is possible to process a wide range of fine particle sizes and the process can be tailored to the unique mineralogy of a given deposit.
This paper explores the current physical beneficiation of rare earth element-bearing minerals with regard to the minerals pro-cessed, the unit operations employed, some processes currently utilized at the major rare earth mines and processing plants and fi-nally, areas necessitating further research. 2. Currently exploited minerals

A new collector for bastnaesite flotation - modified hydroxamic acid (MOHA) has been developed through several years laboratory research. The experimental results of flotation of pure bastnaesite mineral and rare earth ores, and the application experience in flotation plants showed that MOHA is an efficient collector for bastnaesite flotation.
